Hope, Help, and Healing

Is sickness a result of sin? Maybe. Maybe not. Does prayer bring about healing? Maybe. Maybe not. Is this description already making you feel uneasy? Welcome to the tension in James 5. Arguably the most contested and debated section in the entire letter, many people have understood it in many different ways. Sadly, the misinterpretations have created a lot of pain, confusion, and disappointment for many. But this wasn’t James’s intention. He wrote this section to bring about hope, help and healing to those who needed it. But in order to understand how, we must first understand its original context. Only then will we be able to faithfully bring it into our present context. If you’ve ever been disappointed that your prayers for healing were not answered, this will be helpful teaching to watch.
