Episode 199 – 3 Gifts of Christmas Pt 1: Gold

Key Passage(s): Matthew 2:11

Each Christmas, talk inevitably turns to gifts and gift-giving. But often, we give from a place of comfort and convenience. The Christmas story, however, teaches us a deeper lesson about giving our best. In “3 Gifts of Christmas,” we explore the significance of the Magi’s gifts in Matthew 2:11, and as we’ll see with the gift of gold, the most precious gifts we give are the ones that cost us the most. By the end of this episode, you’ll be inspired to ask: What costly gift might God be inviting me to give this season?

Interesting how Frankincense and myrrh are extracted by “bleeding” a tree. Grapes and oil are crushed for their products. The olive oil and frankincense crushed and bled were mixed with grain which was crushed for bread were a pleasant aroma to the Lord.

Through personal study, I believe that the answers to why the magi brought the ‘gifts’ they did are outlined in Exodus 30. God outlines what is needed for worship in the temple – Gold bowls for burning particular kinds of incense to worship Him. My belief is that they brought elements of worship because scripture tells us that is the reason they gave for coming to Jerusalem. I don’t necessarily think that the ‘gifts’ were left with Joseph and Mary.
