The Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard is a stunning and sophisticated story on the interconnectivity of justice, generosity, and gratitude. It was a challenging story in Jesus’s day, and it’s a challenging one for us as well because it exposes our propensity to spend time, money, and energy pursuing what others have, rather than being grateful for what we have. As a result, our generosity is stunted and we’re unable to embody Jesus’s radical message communicated in this parable. Gratitude is the engine for generosity. The more grateful we are, the more joy we’ll possess, and the more we’ll see the kingdom advance here on earth.
