Grumble or Eat
One of the most challenging passages to understand is Jesus’ “Bread of Life” teaching (John 6) where he tells his audience to “eat his flesh and drink his blood.” And then he goes on to say that if they don’t, they have no life in them. Whoa! That’s intense. In fact, it’s so intense, many of his followers grumble and leave as a result. Jesus was inviting them to eat “The Bread of Life” at a time when they were in great need. But they missed what he was saying and it cost them. The same invitation is given to us well. And once we understand this passage in context, we’ll understand what the remarkable offer is for us as well, and how it nourishes and sustains us especially in those times when our expectations and realities do not align.
