The opening verses in the book of Ruth are devastating when they are understood in their proper context. Naomi finds herself in the direst of circumstances. She has lost her husband and her two sons, and her life resembles the famine that caused her and her family to leave Bethlehem in the first place. Like Naomi, there are times when we find ourselves in our own famines in life. Only when we begin to acknowledge our famines will we open ourselves up to the things God desires to do in the midst of them.
