Episode 008 – Dying To Expectation

Key Passage(s): Matthew 16:21-23

One of the most challenging aspects of faith is unmet expectations – that gap between what we thought/hoped God would do and what actually occurred. So how do we deal with those moments? That’s what this teaching addresses as we explore the bizarre exchange between Jesus and Peter at Caesarea Philippi.

Discussion Questions

  • What’s your biggest takeaway from the teaching?
  • Where do you feel like God has let you down or is currently letting you down?
  • What expectations are you holding onto tightly?
  • Why are you holding onto them so tightly?
  • How is this affecting you?
  • What’s one step you can take in dying to those expectations this week?

For Further Study

  • Dying To Expectation – this is the full sermon I did on this passage from Matthew 16, including laying out the context for why Jesus has this seminal conversation with his disciples at Caesarea Philippi.

Hope this feed back is ok!
    So enjoy your presentations.
We see Jesus, Peter, the 11, YEHOVAH,aaand ha satan all, involved here, on earth!!!!!! Then Peter, challanges his Rebbi–saay whaat????? Amazing, never realized that before!!!!!!
Your revelation of your pruning, normal, gives us a feeling of what it was like w Adam,Noah, Abraham, Prophets,Jacob,David etc and what it might have been for them.
As we are to -“be conformed to the image of The Anointed one,Christ”, then pruning will come in every believers life & that is normal. Some more intense than others but all will be pruned! We should alert all new converts to this when bringing them in so it‘s not a shock nor a challenge as in, Oh I must have sinned for this to happen? Instead proof that one is not a “bastard”!
    Thanks for sharing!

Thank you for your message Brad. So many times in my life I have been given a direction to go from the Lord. I am growing in my responses, but normally I will say “Got it” and elbow God out of the way so I can accomplish what HE wants. Doesn’t make a lot of sense, does it? I am thankful Abraham wasn’t like me when he put Isaac on the altar. Thank you for your Nashville testimony. Somewhere in your story is a fine line between not moving until you know for sure the Lord’s will in the move, and making the move forging your own opportunities. It looks like you made the right choice and the Lord is blessing your journey. Again, thank you and keep the messages coming.

Brad that is a prefect message for me today and tomorrow and the next day and….. I often put God in my box and don’t understand why He doesn’t meet me there. Your message has so come alive with my reading of Jesus’s final week. I am blessing God for you and your teachings.
